Maine Poodle Rescue - How we got started:

We have formed Maine Poodle Rescue in order to help address the failure of the overburdened and inadequate state animal welfare system and to address the gap between the welfare of standard poodles in puppy mills and the care the state of Maine currently offers. Networking in public and political forums, committees, agencies, etc is a primary focus for Maine Poodle Rescue. We as citizens can rescue and purchase poodles and help change the condition of breeders requirements by or at local levels. We ensure that each poodle is spayed/neutered, has their vaccinations updated, are tested for heart worms and other parasites, have a thorough vet exam, and are treated, if possible, for any known conditions found before adoption.

All medical information is fully disclosed to new owners. The poodles are placed in foster homes that provide love, patience, structure and discipline to help the poodles adjust before being adopted. The poodles stays in foster care can vary from several days to several months, depending upon the poodles condition and needs. Unlike a shelter or kennel living, fostering in a home environment allows the personal evaluation of each poodle for behavior and temperament issues. We learn how each poodle reacts to other animals, children or strangers.

Adoption is done on a case-by-case basis.

How we do it:

Maine Poodle Rescue is a non-profit corporation. We are 100% volunteer-based, which means overhead costs are minimal and your donation is put to direct use for the good of the poodles we rescue . We do not receive any government funding. We are entirely supported by charitable donations.

We also wish to:

Speak out against the harmfulness of over breeding, address the conditions of kennels and ensure there are acceptable numbers of each male and female poodles, demand accountability from the breeder to the local or state level.

  • Promote the cause of spay/neuter
  • Educate the public about the breed and the pleasure have having a standard poodle, or two or three.
